MG Ministry Weekend – Building Up the Body of Christ

One of the distinctives of EAST is MG (Mentoring Group) Ministry Weekend, when students, with guidance from mentors, gain ministry experience at regional locations in partnership with local churches and ministries. The students are part of EAST MGs with faculty as the MG Leaders. In the words of Mrs Josephine Goh, EAST Director of MG, “Ministry Weekend is a valuable time to behold God’s faithful love for his people in Asia! It is also a timely pause for our students to apply what they have learned in classes; truly a time of ‘intentional mentoring and enhanced learning without walls’ experience.”

This year, from 14 to 19 September, there were five teams that ministered in three countries: Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand. What did they do at these locales and how was the experience beneficial to the team members and the hosts?

Mentoring Groups, Go Forth!

This coming weekend, EAST Mentoring Groups (MGs) head out to various locations in the neighbouring region to serve and minister in a variety of contexts. These short ministry stints are opportunities for our program students to practice servant leadership and apply practical ministry skills together with their fellow MG members. Ministry Weekend is thus part of the holistic development of head, heart and hands in our students that puts classroom learning into hands-on practice.

Our Mentoring Groups will be serving in a culture outside of their own while learning how best to work together in teams. This provides a rich environment where team unity, conflict resolution, and growth can take place. Read more

Starting 2022!

Our first week of the January 2022 semester was a welcome for our new students and a time of gathering as Mentoring Groups to start off this new season.

As a community, It was good to see each other again after the December holidays, and we appreciated getting to start the semester with intentional times for Mentoring Groups to gather. This is one way our new students get connected with everyone in the wider EAST community, and with the fellow students journeying alongside within the same Mentoring Groups. The EAST community is where we rally around each other in fellowship, prayer and encouragement.

We give thanks for our community in school and continue to walk with each other in the semester ahead.

Mentoring Groups in Ministry Action

Each of our MGs(Mentoring Groups) at EAST has spent the recent weekend serving together in ministry over various platforms to bless communities in Singapore and abroad. The annual MG Ministry Weekend has traditionally been a time for the faculty, staff and students in each MG to spend a weekend together to serve at a ministry located either in Singapore or within the Southeast-Asia region.

Most of our MGs have faculty, staff and students from a range of different countries, so this an intentional season of cross-cultural ministry that starts from within each Mentoring Group to eventually reach out to communities either in Singapore or around the region.

The MG Ministry Weekend is a time where ministry skills are sharpened and leadership is developed in our students, as each one takes on responsibilities in various segments of ministry and team leadership. Team dynamics are also developed, as members within each MG communicate with each other and serve together with teamwork.

Give Back to EAST

Alumni Michael Tien (left) and Wong Soo Fong (right)

My wife, Soo and I are alumni of EAST, having spent 5 wonderful years at EAST as students.

During one of my first lessons the lecturer made this statement “If the student has not learnt, than I have not taught”. In my years of previous education, I have not heard such a statement and I knew that my time at EAST was going to be extraordinary.
