Ps Daniel & Phoebe Chua
Recently, Ps Daniel Chua, an EAST Adjunct Faculty who has been our Staff Retreat Speaker and taught classes like Pastoral Leadership and Exposition of Ruth announced that he will be retiring as the Pastor-at-large of Mount Carmel Bible Presbyterian Church which he has been shepherding for the past 33 years by the end of this October. EAST News caught up with him recently as he “re-tires” (which he refers to in this next phase of his life and ministry).
Ps Daniel has been married to Phoebe for 37 years, and together they have three adult children who are all married (eldest son Timothy & daughter-in-law Melanie, daughter Evelyn and son-in-law Melvin, and youngest son John Calvin and daughter-in-law Lynette) and five grandchildren. When the Singapore-Johor border re-opens, he and his wife will reside in Johor Bahru where his two grandchildren live but will nonetheless still make regular visits to Singapore.

L to R: Wayne, Alumna Agnes Goh, Nicole (15), Sean (17)
EAST News caught up with local alumna Agnes Goh who graduated in 2018 with a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies through a series of short interview questions. She is currently a pastoral staff with Toa Payoh Methodist Church, often conducting ministry through zoom meetings and voice calls, with the current social restrictions tightening up again due to higher cases of Covid-19. Below is the short interview and some of her prayer requests.
1. How has life been for you since your graduation from EAST?
God has continued to lead, guide and bless me and my family in different ways. Since graduating from EAST, I have also graduated into parenting teenagers which has been wonderful (contrary to popular belief), as I get to talk and discuss a lot more common things of interest with my teenagers. It’s also very heartfelt and satisfying when they share with me their thoughts and feelings about issues they are grappling. I try to help them see how God is at work in their lives. After graduation, I still did not know where I was to serve, but God led me patiently and clearly.

Below is a reflection of the MG (Mentoring Group) Ministry Weekend by Dr Jeannette Shubert, EAST Associate Academic Dean, as she recounts the experiences and learning by students and faculty.
Teamwork. Faith-stretching. Cross-cultural. Partnership. Learning. The size of these words expanded as EAST students and faculty contributed to an online Word Cloud during a recent Chapel service. The Word Cloud highlighted repeated responses to the question, “What three words would you use to describe MG (Mentoring Group) Ministry Weekend?”
Each September, East Asia School of Theology (EAST) suspends classes as MGs, comprised of faculty and students, partner with churches and ministries in Singapore and nearby countries for Ministry Weekend.

Back row: Boon Aitee, Esther Tan, Ee-Yuing Wong (EAST Staff) Front Row: Veronica & David Sun (EAST Alumnus)
EAST Alumnus David Sun and his wife Veronica recently made their first visit to EAST Mission Hub since the school moved there last year. While he was pursuing his Master of Divinity in Intercultural Studies at EAST (he graduated in 2019), David was also the President of the Student Council. Some would have remembered his youngest son Samuel who would come along to help with vacuuming the premises after various events. They were a good father and son team. David and his wife flew into town from Hong Kong where they reside to visit Samuel who has recently been enlisted into Singapore’s National Service.
