The Lord is our Strength and Shelter

Psalm 59:16 “But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.”

This psalmist sings of his reliance on God and his strength. As fallible humans, we may crumble in the face of times of trouble. When this happens, remember to turn to our Lord God for strength and shelter.

His strength is immeasurable, his love everlasting. He will be our refuge and will give us the strength we need to push through times of weakness.

Local Alumna serving at Toa Payoh Methodist Church: Agnes Goh

L to R: Wayne, Alumna Agnes Goh, Nicole (15), Sean (17)

EAST News caught up with local alumna Agnes Goh who graduated in 2018 with a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies through a series of short interview questions. She is currently a pastoral staff with Toa Payoh Methodist Church, often conducting ministry through zoom meetings and voice calls, with the current social restrictions tightening up again due to higher cases of Covid-19. Below is the short interview and some of her prayer requests.

1. How has life been for you since your graduation from EAST?

God has continued to lead, guide and bless me and my family in different ways. Since graduating from EAST, I have also graduated into parenting teenagers which has been wonderful (contrary to popular belief), as I get to talk and discuss a lot more common things of interest with my teenagers. It’s also very heartfelt and satisfying when they share with me their thoughts and feelings about issues they are grappling. I try to help them see how God is at work in their lives. After graduation, I still did not know where I was to serve, but God led me patiently and clearly.

Although we have never seen God, we experience His abiding presence, and His love is made visible as we show love to others. We are thus empowered to bless and love one another, delighting in Him, and glorifying His name!

Devotion to God

“I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.” Psalms 116:1-2 NIV.

The psalmist begins his song with a declaration of love, simply announcing to all who listen that he loves the Lord, as should be our attitude in our lives, boldly proclaiming our love for Him. The next 2 verses describe what God has done for us to deserve this devotion.

“He heard my cry” and “He turned his ear to me”. Our loving Father in heaven listens to our prayers, thanksgiving and lamentations. Our Love is shown in return when we turn to him at all times in our lives be it highs or lows, and we are to call on him for as long as we live.
