Mental Health Resources for Parents/Caregivers

Mental health of young people is a key concern for Singapore with recent events throwing a spotlight on it. For this #SaturdayGoodRead, EAST News reproduces a set of resources originally compiled for parents of youths at Grace Baptist Church (GBC). We thank Ms Hannah Yeo of the GBC Youth Ministry for graciously allowing us to do so. May it be a timely and useful resource for parents or caregivers to engage in ongoing conversations with their teenagers, not only for those who have signs of mental health challenges.
According to the Straits Times, “more than half of the young people polled by the National Youth Council [NYC] in the second half of 2020 said that mental well-being was a challenge for them, with some citing anxiety over the future, stress over finances, and worries about academic or work performance.” Even before the onset of COVID-19, mental health for youths was an issue flagged by NYC (see its April 2019 issue of Y+).
Prayer Pointers – 12 August 2021
“The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad.” Psalm 126:3, ESV
Singapore celebrated her 56th National Day on 9 August with a ceremonial parade and an aerial fly-past across the island state. While the celebration is muted due to covid restrictions we could sense the united heartbeat and resolve of those residing in Singapore. The theme song for this year’s celebration is aptly titled, “We did it before, and we’ll do it again!” As people of God, may we add, “by God’s grace and mercy.”
PRAYER POINTERS
12 August 2021
Praise God for Singapore’s progressive rollout of covid vaccination program resulting in a high level of completed vaccination of over 70% by the National Day.
Pray for:
More international and local students to join EAST multicultural community onsite or online for the equipping of servant leaders and fulfilling Christ’s mandate in bringing His love and good news to our neighbours, near and far.
God’s wisdom for our government to protect lives and livelihoods and provide a socially cohesive and peaceful environment conducive for economic recovery and missional effectiveness.
We are One Body

Romans 12:5, NIV: “so in Christ, we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”
Paul in most of Romans 12 explains that the worship of our God is to become living sacrifices with Romans 12:3-8 detailing our responsibility as a living sacrifice. As the body of Christ, the church and everyone in it has a part to play. Our individual gifts are to work together to achieve glory to Christ.
As the church, Christ’s body on earth we are often spread across many different places with vastly different jobs, but together we are one unified “being,” a single entity with a single purpose.
In addition to this, we are to remember that we form ONE body. No one is left out, and everyone has a responsibility and should be wholly accountable to each other.
Happy 56th National Day, Singapore!
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
– Psalm 33:12, ESV
Happy 56th Birthday, Singapore! Together our Singapore Spirit! God bless our Nation! 🇸🇬
Let’s celebrate our unity as a country of diverse cultures.
Together, we will rise from these uncertain times… we did it before, and we will do it again.
