Classroom Without Walls: EAST MG Ministry Weekend

Beyond the Classroom: A Classroom Without Walls at Ministry Weekend
What happens when theological learning moves beyond the classroom and into the communities we are called to serve? At East Asia School of Theology (EAST), EAST MG Ministry Weekend gives students and faculty opportunities to put faith into practice, deepen relationships and grow together through hands-on ministry. Described as a “classroom without walls,” Ministry Weekend brings mentoring groups (MGs) into real-life ministry settings where spiritual formation takes place through service, relationships and reflection. As faculty and students serve alongside one another, they discover how God shapes them through the people they meet and the experiences they share.
Serving Beyond the Classroom
Ministry Weekend provides opportunities to serve alongside local churches and ministry partners across Southeast Asia, including Batam, Indonesia; a creative access city in Indo-China; and Chiang Mai, Thailand. In Batam, teams served with House of Glory and Filadelfia Bible Presbyterian Church through youth ministry, Bible teaching, worship, testimony sharing and outreach. In a creative access city in Indo-China, ministry with a local church included a jewellery-making outreach at a café and a young adults’ seminar on Your True Identity. Other experiences included serving children and refugees and engaging with local communities.
These activities reminded participants that ministry takes many forms. Whether teaching Scripture, leading worship, sharing a testimony or building friendships, each act of service can become an opportunity to demonstrate Christ’s love. Ministry is not merely about completing activities or delivering programmes. It is about people. Sharing a meal, listening to someone’s story and spending time with local communities can open doors to meaningful conversations and deeper relationships. Such encounters call for patience, humility and a willingness to understand people within their own contexts. Through these experiences, students learn that genuine care for people is integral to effective ministry. Relationships are not simply a means to an end; they are part of what it means to serve others faithfully.
Learning Through Intentional Mentoring
Ministry Weekend also provides opportunities for students to learn by observing their MG leaders in action. As leaders participate hands-on in ministry activities, students see how biblical truths are communicated and applied in real-life settings.
MG leaders also observe students as they serve and affirm them during debriefs, helping them recognise their contributions, reflect on their experiences and identify areas for growth.
Faculty and students learn alongside one another, sharing the responsibilities, challenges and joys of ministry. Through this intentional mentoring, they grow in self-awareness and develop as Christlike leaders.
Serving Together Through Challenges
Ministry rarely unfolds exactly as expected. Changing circumstances and demanding experiences call for adaptability, perseverance and dependence on God. Working together helps participants appreciate one another’s strengths and weaknesses, support one another and contribute towards a common purpose. Unexpected encounters can also become meaningful opportunities to serve, reminding participants to remain attentive to God’s leading even when plans change.
Faithful in Planting and Watering
A key reminder from Ministry Weekend comes from 1 Corinthians 3:6:
“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.” This verse captures an important truth about Christian ministry. We are called to be faithful in sharing the Gospel, nurturing relationships and discipling others. The growth, however, ultimately belongs to God. As students return to their respective countries and fields of service, they are encouraged to build genuine relationships, persevere through challenges, serve in unity and trust God with the results.
Ministry Weekend reminds the EAST community that theological learning and practical service belong together. As we continue equipping Christlike leaders for the Great Commission, may we remain faithful in planting and watering the seeds entrusted to us, trusting God to bring the growth in His time and according to His purposes.
