Faculty in 1.1.1 Revival Prayer Movement

Above is a Korean video clip (with English subtitles) of Dr Justine Han sharing prayer requests for Singapore. It is part of mobilising prayer through the 1.1.1 Prayer Revival Ministry. Dr Justine Han, along with her husband, Dr Raymond Song, are both resident faculty members of EAST. She teaches Christian Marriage and Family and Biblical Counselling courses at EAST. The write-up below by Dr Justine Han gives an insight into the genesis of the 1.1.1 Revival Prayer Movement which she is involved in.

1.1.1. (one-one-one) Revival Prayer Movement could be traced back to its origin from Korea Campus Crusade (KCCC) when the founder Dr. JoonGon Kim was still alive as a spiritual leader. He authored daily “Jesus Column” series in the renowned daily newspaper for mobilizing Christians in prayer and reflection of God’s words once a day. “Jesus Column” seemed like a refreshing drink from the spiritual fountain for many followers of Christ. KCCC believed in the power of unifying prayer amongst Christians thus, mobilized college students and church members to pray for revival for one minute at one o’clock daily which came up with the name “ 1.1.1” I grew up with that prayer movement to halt everything at one o’clock for one minute and pray for revival in the nation. KCCC had practiced 1.1.1 Revival Prayer for quite a long time but then had stopped for a couple of decades.

Current 1.1.1 Revival Prayer has such similar dynamics as to pay attention to God in the middle of the day through one minute prayer. It refreshes one’s mind and soul to pray with many other Christians around the world. As the world has been swept by the Covid-19 pandemic like a wildfire, in Oct 2020, the founder of International City Ministry, Rev. Kim Hosung, initiated this prayer movement again with some spiritual leaders around the world to gather together via online in order to ignite the world with repentance and hope in Christ in the midst of despair by the pandemic. The common thing Christians could unite together without limitation and boundaries is prayer. Prayer is the only viable option to be together in spirit since physical meetings, traveling, and church worship in person were all halted.

The pandemic posed a precarious future of our daily lives and the internet became a highway to connect Christians and people around the world. 1.1.1 one minute video guide sends out daily for many Korean speaking Christians to join for prayer via internet. There are 750,000 Korean Diaspora around the world. This revival prayer hopes to rekindle these fervent praying Korean Christians’ prayer call. This revival prayer movement seeks to pass on such wonderful prayer legacy to the next generation.

People who join 1.1.1 Revival Prayer can receive the daily prayer item via social media (Facebook, KakaoTalk), New York CTS TV station (YouTube), and GBS radio broadcasting. We may not know how many are linked to this prayer movement but we definitely know there are hidden 7,000 Elijah’s warriors who have never bowed down to Baal, will faithfully stop everything at one o’clock to pray for one minute for revival of Christians and the Church. This prayer movement spreads from North America, to South America, Europe, Asia, South East Asia, Africa, and Australia. Some churches have adopted this prayer movement for their congregation’s involvement in daily prayer. These are often initiated by the lead pastors who have personally participated in 1.1.1 Revival Prayer.

Although there are limitations in personnel and resources to continue 1.1.1 Revival Prayer to broadcast daily prayer items around the world, the passion and dedication among those who are united in believing prayer movement will not easily die out. As the pandemic hits every corner of our daily lives, the strong hope we as Christians have to witness God at work through our prayer revival is real. In the midst of busy schedules, people set the alarm at 1 o’clock to go off and pray for the given daily prayer item wherever they are, whatever they do. They pause for one minute to pray with other Christians around the world. It is such a healthy spiritual exercise to think about God in the mid day and focus on revival around the world.

1.1.1 Revival Prayer Movement believes 2 Chronicles 7:14 applies to all believers everywhere: “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” The rampage of the pandemic makes Christians pause and think about this world’s problems including spiritual emptiness and moral breakdown. We ought to pray and seek God’s face.
