Justice and the Common Good

The ETHOS Public Conference 2017 was held at Trinity Theological College on Saturday, 30 September 2017. The theme was “Justice and the Common Good” with seven seminaries in Singapore partnering together for the conference. There were four speakers from these seminaries covering the biblical framework for justice and three other topics on immigration, ecology, and human rights–all for the “common good.”

Dr Philip Satterthwaite, principal of the Biblical Graduate School of Theology (BGST), gave the opening session on the “Biblical Perspective of Justice and the Common Good.” This was followed by Dr Fong Choon Sam, Dean of Academic Studies at Baptist Theological Seminary (BTS), addressing the issue of “Justice and Immigration.” Dr Kwa Kiem Kiok, EAST resident faculty who teaches inter-cultural studies, spoke on “Justice and the Ecological Crisis.” Finally, Dr Richard Goetz, a professor of theology at TCA College, gave “A Critical Evaluation Of The Nature, Origin And Basis Of Human Rights In Light Of Individualism, Social Responsibility And The Common Good.”

After each speaker has spoken, the speaker fielded questions from the audience. There were pastoral responses and panel discussions too. Dr Roland Chia was the moderator for the conference.

ETHOS Conference 2017 – Justice & the Common Good

* NOTE CHANGE OF CONFERENCE DATE TO 30 SEP 2017 *

“But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream” (Amos 5:24). Justice is one of the most important themes in the Bible! Justice flows from the very heart and character of the God who reveals himself in its pages. What is biblical justice? How can the Church bear witness to the just God in a world tainted by such gross injustice? How can Christians work towards the common good in the wake of suspicion, alienation and discrimination? This conference seeks to address these and many other issues.

Seminar on Human Sexuality, Marriage, and the Church

What do the Bible and Christian traditions have to say about sexuality, marriage, and family? In recent decades, significant shifts in society’s views on marriage and family have resulted in unprecedented changes to its oldest institution. How should Christians respond to these changes? Should the Christian understanding be subjected to revision amidst this sea change in society?

Come and have your questions addressed at the free public conference on “Human Sexuality, Marriage, and the Church.” The event is co-organized by seven seminaries in Singapore, including EAST. Admission is free, but entry is by registration only. For details on the speakers and to register, visit www.ethosinstitute.sg/conference2016
