President’s Charge: Never Depart From God’s Call

 

“May you never depart from God’s call for you.”
With these words, EAST President Rev Dr Chan Chong Hiok encouraged the graduating class at East Asia School of Theology’s 32nd Commencement to remain faithful to God wherever He leads them next.

Commencement marks the completion of years of study, but it is also the beginning of a new season of service. The graduates leave EAST carrying many memories of learning, growth and transformation. They represent a vibrant mix of cultures, countries, languages and ministry backgrounds brought together by what can only be described as a divine appointment from God. Their time at EAST has equipped them for different fields and vocations. Some will serve through local churches, while others may cross cultural and geographical boundaries to participate in God’s mission. Their ministries may look different, but their calling remains the same: to follow Christ faithfully, love people and participate in His Great Commission.

Remember the One Who Called You

Theological education provides valuable biblical knowledge, ministry skills and opportunities for spiritual formation. Yet these gifts are never meant to become ends in themselves. They prepare God’s servants to know Him more deeply and make Him known more faithfully. As graduates move into new responsibilities, they may encounter unexpected opportunities, difficult decisions and seasons of uncertainty.

In those moments, the essential question is not simply, “What work should I do?” but, “How can I remain faithful to the God who called me?” God’s call is not confined to a particular role, organisation or location. It is first a call to belong to Christ, walk closely with Him and reflect His character wherever He sends us.

Build Spiritual Movements as Servant Leaders

Rev Dr Chan also reminded the graduates to be servant leaders as they build spiritual movements through churches and on the mission frontiers. Christian leadership is not primarily about position, recognition or influence. It follows the example of Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve. Servant leaders listen, love, encourage and willingly place the needs of others before their own. They use what God has entrusted to them to strengthen His people and advance His purposes.

The graduates are therefore called not merely to apply what they have learned, but to embody it; with humility, courage and love.

Love People and Obey Christ

The President’s charge can be expressed simply:
Be a servant leader. Love people. Obey Christ’s Great Commission.

These words are relevant not only to graduating students but to every follower of Jesus. Wherever God places us – in a church, workplace, family, school or mission field, we are called to serve faithfully and make Christ known. As EAST’s graduates enter their next season, our prayer is that they will remain rooted in Christ, attentive to His voice and obedient to His leading. May they never depart from God’s call. And through their lives and ministries, may the Lord always be glorified.
